Sensational Bodies
Creative direction, Styling, Model
This photoshoot explores ideas of sensationalism, looking particularly at topics such as sex, scandal and exaggerated news stories. We wanted to explore how paper’s try to regain readers attention through exploiting and overdramatising certain subjects.
One of the key themes of this photo-series is rebellion against objectification. The use of lingerie is not simply about eroticism, it’s a deliberate choice. By wearing lingerie, the media’s expectation of the sexualized woman is flipped into a statement of power. Lingerie, often used to reduce women to objects of desire in the tabloids, becomes an expression of her choosing to display her body on her own terms.
The juxtaposition of the media’s exaggerated headlines and the self-confident woman who remains unfazed by them invites the viewer to reflect on the deeper themes of exploitation, power and autonomy. Through her lens, we see the media’s tactics for what they truly are empty distractions to sell stories. Through her self-confidence, we find a rebuke to the sensationalism that has defined so much of modern media.
